The core difference is how money moves. At a real-money online casino you deposit dollars, wager dollars and withdraw dollars. At a sweepstakes casino you never wager cash. You buy Gold Coins for entertainment play, you receive Sweeps Coins as a bonus or through a no-purchase entry route, and you can redeem eligible Sweeps Coins for prizes such as gift cards or a bank transfer. That one structural change drives everything else: which states you can play in, how you cash out, what rules apply and what you should check before you sign up.
This guide walks through each difference using figures from our own brand records, verified in October 2026. Sweepstakes casinos are 21+, no purchase necessary, void where prohibited and not available in all states. Our rankings are editorial and operators cannot buy a rank. Difference 1: you buy coins, not bets
When you spend money at a sweepstakes casino, you are buying a Gold Coin package. The Sweeps Coins come bundled as a bonus. You are not buying Sweeps Coins directly, and you are not placing a cash wager.
Here is what a first purchase actually gets you at three sites:
- WOW Vegas: 1,500,000 WOW Coins + 30 SC for $9.99.
- Chumba Casino: 10,000,000 GC + 30 SC for $10.
- LoneStar Casino: 125,000 GC + 50 SC for $24.99.
Gold Coins have no prize value at all. They exist so you can play for fun. Only Sweeps Coins can be redeemed, and only after you meet the site's rules.
Difference 2: you can play without paying
A real-money online casino may give a deposit bonus, but you still need to deposit to play for money. Sweepstakes casinos must offer a way to get Sweeps Coins with no purchase. Most do this with a signup bonus, a daily login bonus and a mail-in or similar free entry method.
Signup amounts vary a lot:
- Stake.us: 250,000 GC + 25 SC.
- WOW Vegas: 250,000 WOW Coins + 5 SC, credited over the first three days.
- McLuck: 7,500 GC + 2.5 SC.
- HelloMillions: 2.5 SC + 15,000 GC after verification, no promo code needed.
- Pulsz: 5,000 GC, and Jackpota: 7,500 GC. Our records show no Sweeps Coins in these two signup offers.
Daily bonuses add up if you log in regularly. LoneStar and RealPrize both list 5,000 GC + 0.3 SC per day. Stake.us lists 10,000 GC + 1 SC. Many other operators do not publish a daily figure.
Difference 3: redemptions are not withdrawals
At a real-money online casino, your balance is cash and you withdraw it. At a sweepstakes casino, you redeem Sweeps Coins, and each site sets its own minimum, speed and method. This is the part that catches new players out.
| Site | Minimum to redeem | Stated timing |
|---|---|---|
| McLuck | 10 SC gift card, 75 SC cash | Gift cards 48h, cash 10 days |
| HelloMillions | 10 SC gift card, 75 SC cash | A few business days |
| LoneStar Casino | 45 SC | 1 to 3 business days |
| RealPrize | 45 SC gift card, 100 SC cash | 1 to 5 days |
| WOW Vegas | 25 SC gift card, 100 SC cash | Up to 5 business days |
| Jackpota | 10 SC gift card, 75 SC cash | 2 to 5 business days |
| Chumba Casino | 100 SC | Not published |
Two practical points. First, Sweeps Coins usually need to be played through before they count as redeemable. Reviewers report a 1x playthrough at LoneStar and at Crown Coins Casino. Second, expect identity verification before your first redemption. Finish it early so it does not hold up a prize later.
Difference 4: where you can legally play
Real-money online casinos operate only in states that have passed laws licensing them. Sweepstakes casinos operate under sweepstakes promotion rules, so they reach more states, but that access is shrinking. As of October 2026, our records list these states as closed to sweepstakes casinos by law or in practice: CA, CT, ID, IN, LA, ME, MI, MT, NV, NJ, NY, TN and WA.
Each operator also sets its own exclusion list, and these differ:
- High 5 Casino excludes 22 states, including AZ, IA, OK, PA and RI.
- Stake.us lists VT and KY among its exclusions.
- WOW Vegas lists IL.
- Pulsz lists AL and AZ.
- Crown Coins Casino lists CA, ID, LA, MI, MT, NV and WA.
For some brands, including LoneStar, Chumba, Legendz and Jackpota, our records name no excluded states. That does not mean they accept players everywhere. Check the operator's terms before you buy anything. Our state guide on where sweepstakes casinos are legal is the place to start.
Difference 5: who oversees the site
Real-money online casinos hold a licence from the gambling regulator in each state where they operate. Sweepstakes casinos do not hold US state gambling licences, because they are not offering cash wagering. Oversight comes from sweepstakes and consumer protection law instead.
Some operators publish other credentials. VGW Games Limited, linked to Chumba Casino, holds Malta Gaming Authority licence MGA/B2C/188/2010 for promotional play games. Most operators in our records publish no licence details, and we do not guess. Corporate details help too: LoneStar is a sister site of RealPrize, run by the same Delaware company, Realplay Tech Inc.
Difference 6: the games are closer than you think
The game libraries overlap heavily with real-money sites, because many of the same studios supply both. McLuck lists NetEnt, Playtech, Evolution, Relax Gaming and others. HelloMillions lists NetEnt, Playtech, Yggdrasil and Nolimit City. You will find Megaways, Hold and Win and cascading reel slots across most brands.
Live dealer play exists in a social format. HelloMillions runs Auto Roulette, Live Roulette, Gravity Roulette and Gravity Blackjack. McLuck has live blackjack, roulette and game shows. Some sites go further: Stake.us has built-in poker with fast-fold and tournament formats, and Legendz puts a social casino, social live casino and social sportsbook in one account.
Return to player data is rarely published. High 5 Casino says its games average 96% RTP. Stake.us lists Grand Bonus Baccarat at 98.11%. Most others do not publish figures.
Difference 7: payments
Purchase methods look familiar. McLuck takes Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Trustly and Skrill. WOW Vegas adds American Express. Redemptions typically go by bank transfer or gift card. Stake.us is the outlier: third-party sources report cryptocurrency payments, which the operator's own material does not publish.
What stays the same: the risk to your budget
Buying coins is still spending real money. The fact that you are not placing cash bets does not make losses less real, and no sweepstakes casino can promise you will redeem anything. Use the tools on offer. WOW Vegas lists daily, weekly or monthly spending limits, 24-hour and 7-day breaks, and self-exclusion from 6 months. LoneStar and RealPrize list purchase, play and daily time limits, take-a-break and self-exclusion. Our responsible gaming page has more help, including where to get support.

Do I have to buy anything to play at a sweepstakes casino?
No purchase is necessary. Many sites give Sweeps Coins at signup, for example 250,000 GC + 25 SC at Stake.us or 7,500 GC + 2.5 SC at McLuck, plus daily bonuses at some sites.
How much do I need to redeem Sweeps Coins?
It depends on the site. Gift card minimums in our records start at 10 SC at McLuck, HelloMillions and Jackpota. Cash minimums range from 45 SC at LoneStar to 100 SC at sites such as WOW Vegas, RealPrize and Chumba.
Which states block sweepstakes casinos?
As of October 2026, our records list CA, CT, ID, IN, LA, ME, MI, MT, NV, NJ, NY, TN and WA as closed by law or in practice. Individual operators exclude additional states, so check each site's terms.
